Do you ever wonder why are things such a mess? Shouldn’t someone DO something? It’s not a new question. In 1789, in a sermon titled “Causes of the Inefficacy of Christianity,” John Wesley posed the question: “Why has Christianity done so little good?” The question amounts to: do we practice what we preach? As United Methodists, we agree with James when he writes: “What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works?” (James 2:14) We want to be people who live out our faith. Our General Rules and our Social Principals are good starting points as we consider our historical and current commitment to being God’s people in ways that make a tangible, loving difference in the world for people everywhere.
