In 1740, John Wesley wrote a sermon titled “Free Grace.” In his introduction, he paraphrases part of the eighth chapter of Paul’s letter to the Romans: How freely does God love the world! While we were yet sinners, "Christ died for the ungodly." While we were "dead in our sin," God "spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all." And how freely with him does he "give us all things!" Verily, FREE GRACE is all in all! Wesley proceeds to describe a sacred grace that is freely available to every person, rather than to certain “elect” individuals. This week we continue in our “Rooted” series. We’ll be exploring prevenient grace … grace that is initiated by God to help us understand that we are each a beloved child of God and to prepare us to respond to this deep love in our lives.
