In “Salt and Light,” Pastor Katy Wheat Borhauer continues our journey through Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount and The Third Way sermon series. Reflecting on Matthew 5:13–16, Pastor Katy explores how we often respond to difficult situations by avoiding them or attempting to control them. Jesus offers another way: remaining faithfully present and using the gifts God has given us to bring healing, preservation, hope, and illumination to the world. Jesus does not say that we might someday become salt and light. He tells his followers, “You are the salt of the earth” and “You are the light of the world.” This identity is God’s gift, but it also carries a purpose. As individuals and as a church, we are invited to reject both withdrawal and domination and become a steady, welcoming presence in our homes, workplaces, neighborhoods, relationships, and communities.
